Kazakh orphans face social stigma

More than 16,000 children in the central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan are estimated to be living in state-run orphanages.

But, as Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Almaty, the social stigma surrounding adoption and foster care means many children are unlikely to find a new family.

Gaza aid held up in Jordan

Since June 2007 Gaza has been under a crippling blockade with few essential goods making it through. Now an aid convoy of 250 trucks and ambulances is attempting to reach the Strip to deliver much needed supplies. But a bureaucratic argument with Egypt is holding it back in Aqaba in southwest Jordan. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher reports.

Kenyan elders killed in witch-hunt

Dozens of villagers in the Kenyan district of Kisii are falling prey to superstitious groups accusing them of witchcraft.

The poverty-stricken district, known as Kenya's sorcery belt, has seen an increase in mob attacks on individuals and even killings.

Three months ago, a group of youths tortured five suspected witches before setting them on fire.

Thai villagers bear emotional scars

The small village of Nam Khem in Thailand was destroyed in the tsunami five years ago. More than 1,000 people - about a quarter of the residents - were killed.

Today, few physical signs remain of the destruction in the village.

But as Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports, the psychological impact still lingers.

'Terror attempt' on US aircraft

US authorities say a passenger on board a transatlantic flight is in custody after trying to ignite an explosive device on the plane.

The incident happened as the flight made its final descent into the US city of Detroit.

The White House has called it "an attempted act of terrorism".
