The giant wave swept away loved ones, homes, livelihoods and in some cases entire communities.

In this special report from two of the worst-hit areas - Sri Lanka and the Indonesian province of Aceh - Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports on some of the lessons learned in the wake of the disaster.

Philippines volcano activity intensifies

The explosions at the Mayon volcano in the Philippines are growing more intense, and the area remains on high alert for a major eruption.

Lava has been flowing from the dome for ten days and scientists are concerned a violent, toxic explosion could devastate the area surrounding volcano.

Meanwhile, many of the area residents will have to spend their Christmas in shelters. Al Jazeera's correspondent Marga Ortigas reports from Legazpi City, near Mount Mayon.
